Garlic Butternut Squash

We harvested 6 butternut squash from our garden last week.  For most of the squash, I baked then pureed and froze for use later this year.  I kept a couple out, and last week I made this side dish with dinner.  It smelled amazing while it baked, and we ate all of it!  Even Garrett liked it, and kept asking for more!  It's easy, and if you don't eat alot of variety in your side dishes and vegetables, this is a pretty tasty thing to sample!

I peeled 1 butternut squash, and diced into 1 inch cubes.  I placed the cubes into a casserole baking dish, then I poured in about 2 T of olive oil.  I dumped in 2 T of fresh parsley and 2 cloves of garlic.  Toss this together until it looks like the parsley and garlic are evenly distributed.
I baked this in a 400 degree oven for 50 minutes.  At 35 minutes, I topped the squash with some parmesan.  while the parmesan heated up, it even further enhanced the aroma..wow, it was good!

Been a little under the weather...

Mamas don't get sick, do they?  Thursday I started feeling more nauseous than normal.  With Trenton, I was sick the entire pregnancy, and was dehydrated enough to be hospitalized 5 or 6 times for IV fluids.  With Garrett, I was much luckier, and just dealt with daily nausea, no sickness.  Well, as Thursday wore on, I found myself lying down much of the day, letting Trenton play with Garrett so I could rest, and I realized that it looked like my pregnancy would have alot more discomfort than the last.
I had an appointment with my new OB(got to see my little peanut, and heartbeat!!!), and I was not feeling any better, so he prescribed me some meds to help.  I was hoping I had a fever and was just getting sick, but nope, no fever.  At the end of my appointment, I had to make a mad dash to the restroom---you ladies know what I mean!  Ah, a little better!
We headed out to CVS to fill my prescription, but I was feeling bad again.  When we got home, I immediately became sick again.  So, for the rest of the evening, I tried small sips of ginger ale, 7up, and water...no food, no way!  Of course, I got sick some more...ugh!
The next day was a little better...weak, still nauseous, but no running to the restroom!  The meds really did help, and I am thankful the new doc offered them!
Later in the day, Trenton started complaining about his stomach issues...and, he got sick...yes!  Ok, that's really mean as a mom, isn't it?  But, that means it was just a bug, and not major morning sickness..woohoo!

Anyway, that's what I've been doing instead of shopping and blogging!  Besides that crazy 3 or 4 days, my best friend came to town with her daughter to bring Garrett a toddler bed...we are transitioning from our bed into his own, and it is ROUGH!  I'm tired, and my body hurts from being so sick, plus sleeping on a hard mattress in Garrett's room.  It will all be worth it once he gets the hang of it, but it is slow-going for now.  We must stay on track...we have under 8 months to get him into his own room for naps and sleeping!

A big day ahead tomorrow:  Trenton starts his first day of 8th grade...he'll be in high school next year!  I'm hoping he can show a little more maturity and control this year and prepare himself for the challenges of Freshman year.  Also, my classes start tomorrow.  I finished reading all my pre-class assignments, and began working on some of my homework for our first Unit.  These classes involve alot of writing, so I'll be busy!

Where are all the deals?

I'm disappointed, CVS...I have only shopped with you once or twice in the past month, and sadly, the next few weeks look as equally disappointing.  I'm sure other people can find one or two deals to pick up, but I'm not seeing it...where are the deals?

Oh, well...I can use the break to dive into school, plus Target has kept me busy the past few weeks, and I think I'll make a trip or two to Harps for their double coupon event which starts Wednesday!!  I really don't need alot, but I plan to grab some pasta and flour, and maybe a few other random things.

Here's my plea to CVS(I'm sure you other mamas can relate):  please, please, put out some good deals on Huggies and Pampers soon!  OK, not just a good deal, a GREAT deal...mama has a new baby on the way!

enough silliness, I think I'm tired, which happens early and easily lately...see you all later!

Lovin Target some more this week!

Great deal on Juicy Juice...the large 8-ct boxes are $2, use $1/2 or $2/4 coupons from http://www.juicyjuice.com/, plus the $1 tq, makes each 8-ct pack fifty cents!  I don't ever buy boxed juice, but Garrett really likes being a 'big boy' and using a straw.  These larger boxes are really too big for him, but we'll let him have half a box a day.  Amazingly, the smaller boxes are 2.29...go figure!
I received some great coupons from friends recently in swaps, so I took my giant stack of coupons and cleaned up!  I bought:
6 pr mens Merona socks 0.62 each on clearance, used 6 $3/1 Merona footwear Qs for some awesome overage
3 pks Bic Easy Glide pens 0.99 each, used 3 $1 mqs from http://www.biceasyglide.com/, and 3 $1tqs for some more overage
6 8ct pks Juicy Juice $2 each, used 1 $1/2 & 1 $2/4 mq, and 6 $1tqs
12 Hunts pudding snack packs 0.84-0.95 each, used 3 $1/3 tqs
10 Chef Boyardee, used 1 0.35/3 mq from the 8/15 SS & 10 $1tqs
1# ground beef 2.99, used $2off beef wyb 10 Conagra foods(from a friend)
20 oz Gold & Plump Chicken breasts 3.99, used $2 off chicken wyb 10 Conagra foods
whoppers 1.00(Trenton is going to a movie later with a friend)
1/2# fresh green beans 2.49/lb, used $1tq
1/2# cherries 2.49/lb, used $1tq
1# roma tomatoes 0.99/lb, used $1tq
2 bottles of lime juice 1.19, used $1tq
1 bottle of lemon juice 1.19, used $1tq
12 oz blueberries 2.99, used $1tq
2 12oz blackberries 2.49 each, used 2 $1tqs
3 loaves asiago bread 0.99 each, used 3 $1tqs
I used my own shopping bags, so I got credit for 0.25 more.
With all the coupons and overage, my total was 0.88, yes, 0.88 including the tax!  Shock!  Wow!  My advice is to print a few of those Merona footwear coupons if you haven't already, and go look for those clearanced socks!  I am so happy I was able to find those, and no issues at the register since they don't even beep!!  Those prices on the berries and cherries are cheaper than I saw last week...I might have to go back and grab a couple more containers...Garrett likes blueberries in his smoothies, and he like blackberries in his yogurt, and I will probably eat all those cherries before the middle of the week!

A Farewell, and a Welcome...

Farewell, dear Diet Mountain Dew(my true love).  Goodbye, caffeinated coffee.  See ya later, raw sushi and lunchmeat sandwiches and artificial sweeteners...that's right...I am pregnant!
So, welcome, baby!
We just found out yesterday, haven't even told our families yet...you and some select friends are the first to know.  This is a complete surprise, especially since our youngest is just 15 months old, we both just enrolled in college, and we just (today) had to shell out big bucks for a new central heat/air system.  We only have a 3 bedroom house, so the youngest will be sharing a room for a bit.  The logistics of all this still need to be worked out, but we are figuring it all out one step at a time.  I have alot to do in the next several months, schoolwork, keep up with the house, replenish all our newborn things that I gave away months ago, get Garrett weaned and sleeping in his own bed and able to stay overnight with Grandma(we've never been apart, this will be hard on mama!).  Well, at least we have a partial plan...

The good news is that now maybe I'll feature a few more baby deals...gotta start stocking up on the small diapers(not newborn, my kids aren't that small except their first week!).

Finds with those latest Target coupons

Anyone eagerly awaiting what deals are out there with these new Target coupons?  I stocked up bigtime on some produce and bread today!
I didn't find any great deals for the seafood coupon.
The market pantry bread 0.50/1 or Archer Farms $1/2 simply balanced would be ok for bread, but I'll wait to see if they go on sale before the coupons expire. Right now the MP bread is 1.24-1.49, so 0.74-0.99 after Q.  Right now the AF bread is 2.24, so 1.74 after Q...I can wait!  Especially since the $1 Market Pantry/Archer Farms bakery item coupon is so fantastic!  There are several things you can get for free...rice krispie treats, donuts, half-loaves of french bread, sourdough...and there's larger loaves of bread for 1.27-1.49 before coupon, so time to stock your freezer!  We will use the loaves of artisan breads for lunch sandwiches, the french loaves for french bread pizza.
I found at the Target in Bixby, 1# bags of carrots for 0.50, so free after coupon.  Strawberries are 1.79, so 0.79 after coupon.  You can weight out your apples, peaches, etc, to get to around $1, then use the $1 Q to get those almost free.  1 head of butter lettuce is 0.99, so free after Q.  So many possibilities.
My warning about the bakery and produce coupons:  they are auto-deducting down to the price of the item.  Not a big deal if it's 0.99, but I'll give an example or two:
carrots 0.50, I bought 2 bags, but the coupon auto'd to 0.50, so I had to use 2 coupons
donuts 0.69 each, I bought 2, but the coupon auto'd to 0.69, so I had to use 2 coupons
oranges 0.79 each, I bought 2, coupon auto'd to 0.79
bananas, I didn't buy, but friends are saying they bought over $1 worth, but the coupon auto'd to 0.51, the price of 1#...so my advice is to have enough coupons on hand to cover the number of items or pounds of items, or stick to the price of 1#, like only buy 1# of bananas at a time, or only buy 1 donut, or if you want 2 donuts have 2 coupons...hope that makes sense!
Also, the women's C9 Champion socks are $5, so free after the $5 target coupon.
Hope you are able to get out and score some of these great deals, too!

Weaning a toddler

I asked Lactation Services a question on facebook, to help with day weaning for little Garrett...he is out of control!  I really appreciate their response, and I thought I would share the information they gave me.

Lactation Services of Northeast Oklahoma: I'm sorry you're having a frustrating time, it's really hard when you don't get good sleep too! 15 months is a hard time for them because they have this budding independence that is exciting but yet scares them at the same time so it's very... common that he would increase his nursing because that's his "normal" in a very quickly changing world.

There are ways that you can encourage him to find comfort in something other than nursing. And, it is possible to do it in a loving gentle way. Each little bump in the road is a new opportunity for both of you to practice seeking an alternative to nursing. Offering a snack or a drink, reading a book or taking a quick trip outside can often be distraction enough to help him through the situation. Over time he will learn that he can rely on you for comfort in other ways than nursing.

It's a process though and more often than not, does not happen over night. But, just as he has learned over these past 15 months that you do respond to his needs, he will learn in time that you still have the same ability to meet his needs in ways other than nursing alone.

As for bedtime, some of your solution relies on your night time routine (or lack of one if applicable). There are many options to choose from luckily. You could make a palate on the floor for him to sleep on, or bring his crib mattress in your room, or if you have an extra bed, you could let that be "his" bed. In all of these situations, you could nurse him to sleep or lie with him until he falls asleep in his "bed" and then be able to sleep in your bed alone, for at least until he wakes up. ;-)

Night weaning has been known to be the most difficult time to accomplish but I promise you can get through it. I'll give you some links to follow up with and let you decide what you think might work best for you and your child. But please, if you have more questions or want to continue the conversation, feel free to do so!

I've tried to day wean before, but I never stick with it...that boy's pleas are irresistable!  But yesterday, I was strong, and I only nursed when he was going down for a nap, or going to bed.  The rest of the day, I offered snacks or a cup as an alternative, and he didn't ask for 'booby' as often as normal.  Today I hope for a similar outcome!

School starts in TWO WEEKS

On one hand, I am excited that Trenton will be back at school so I can get a break from one of my kids(terrible?), and I am excited to start my classes.  On the other hand, I am a little nervous about being on my own again with Garrett and all the household responsibilites(Trenton is an enormous help!), and I'm nervous about my classes!  I was reading some course information today and found out I have to maintain a blog for my composition course...wow!  I know, I do already blog, but this will be for a grade!
So, witty title ideas?  Should I stick with my love of Latin and call my new blog 'Letteris mandate', which means 'get it in writing'...or, do I try to be 'punny' and do something like 'Write Time.  Write Place.' or 'On the Write Track', 'Right here. Write now.'  or 'Write here. Right now.' lol.  hmmm, I need ideas!  I am not a very witty person, but I did come up with that all by myself(rolls eyes).  So, what do you think...come on, I know there are a couple people reading this...speak up!

For the love of Target...

Seriously, Target!  I think I'm going to get a break from shopping, then Target puts out some incredible new coupons online...I cannot resist.  Some of their new coupons include $1 off produce, 0.50 off bread, 0.50 off deli item, $1 off frozen seafood, and $1 off bakery item....that looks like potential for alot of free or almost free stuff.  I have to consult with some HVAC people tomorrow(our A/C is totally gone, so we are forced to replace our entire system), but after that, baby willing, I will be at Target to see what I can stock my freezer with...I'm thinking:
produce by the pound, get $1+ worth
loaf of bread is around $1.25, so 0.75 after Q
1/4 lb. deli cheese?
going to check to see if Target sells individually packaged frozen fish to use the seafood Q on
lots of bakery items to qualify...last time I scored lots of cookies, but also a few loaves of garlic bread, so I'm hopeful for more of the same!

The print limit seems to be 1 on these coupons, so ask your friends and family if they can print for you so you can save more!  I have several computers, plus plenty of friends on standby for printing coupons, so I am certain I can stock up on several items this week!!!

See you at Target...

Chicken Noodle Soup in the Slow Cooker

I know, it's hot outside, but I was craving soup...I sent Trenton on his bike to the store to pick up celery this morning.  While he was on his errand, I chopped 1# of carrots I got at Target yesterday for 50 cents, and placed those in the slow-cooker.  I added a package of drumsticks I got at Target awhile back for 24 cents after coupon.  I dumped in some water, thyme, sage, onion, and a little chicken boullion.  When Trenton arrived back home, I chopped 4 stalks of celery(it was only 99 cents a bag) and added them to the dish.
I cooked the soup on low for 6-8 hours, at which point I pulled out the drumsticks and the meat just fell off the bones!  I put the deboned chicken back in the dish to stay hot while I boiled water for the pasta...we were out of egg noodles, so I used some wheat penne pasta...turned out great!  I contemplated adding some tomato juice and a little spice to make more of an Italian pasta soup, but I didn't think the kids would go for it.  Actually, the soup was wonderful as is..no salt, nothing extra!

Funny story, the kids and I were heading out the door for Saturday night Mass as my husband was walking in the door...I quickly told him that there was soup on the top shelf(meaning, the fridge) for him to have before he had to leave again.  When we got back from church, I noticed the soup was untouched...hmm, guess he wasn't hungry!
I noticed about 20 minutes later a can in the trashbag...can of Campbells chunky chicken noodle soup...guess he thought I meant the cabinet top shelf!  Well, he missed out..my soup was far better than a can...he can have some tomorrow!

Do You Save Your Receipts?

If not, you should start!  I have been saving my receipts since I started this whole coupon game.  You never know when you'll find a rebate or a 'try me free' offer on something you just bought.  A large factor in my costs staying so low is due to rebates.

Another reason:  you may need to return something...like the socks I bought yesterday for 1.48/3pr...I bought them at 50% off when they were 2.98 for 3 pr...so, hubby returned them today for me, to get back over $16.  And...the messenger bag I bought at Staples during the 'free backpack' week...although the website showed it was eligible for the rebate, the Rebate Center did not, so back it went!  A $74.99 bag was a little pricey for us...oh well!

I don't return things often, but at times like this, I'm glad I save my receipts!  My oop that was higher than normal last month will even out this month because of those returns.

A day of Target shopping...

Yes, I shopped all day at Target yesterday, except for during lunch and Garrett's nap.  I made it home in time to make dinner and mop the floors....go, me!
What did I buy at Target Friday?  Well, I posted a trip from early in the day here.  After lunch and nap, I headed back out to 3 other Target stores.  I did similar transactions at each:
store 1:
2 pkgs 3 pr mens merona socks 1.48 each
2 pr mens Champion swim trunks 4.98 each, used 2 $5 C9 tqs
post it super sticky pads 1.00 each, used $1mq on each
4 bic pens 0.99 each, used 2 $1/2 mq and 4 $1 tqs
2 Chef Boyardee cans 0.89 each, used $1 tq each
Armor All Wheel protectant 6.99, used $2mq
Armor All glass wipes 3.99, used $2mq
pd 8.51
Then I went over to the Guest Services Counter and let them know I had a coupon I forgot to give the cashier and asked them if they could fix it.  They were happy to help, and gave me back $3 for my $3/2 Armor All product tq.  Why did I wait on the armor all tq?  Well there is a rebate here that I wanted to do, and Target coupons reduce the value of the item on your receipt, so your rebate refund will be less if you use a Target coupon.  Read the rebate carefully before purchase, it has some specific requirement, but it's good til December 2010, and a money-maker with the right coupons!
So, 8.51 oop, -$3 coupon refund=5.51, submit for 6.99 rebate = profit of $1.48

Store 2:
1 pr Champion track pants 3.74, used $5 C9 tq
2 Chef Boyardee cans 0.89 each, used 2 $1 tqs
4 Bic pens 0.99 each, used 2 $1/2 mqs and 4 $1tqs
2pr merona boxers 2.24
3 pr merona socks 1.48
armor all wheel protectant 6.99, used $2mq
armor all wipes 3.99, used $2 mq
pd 8.77oop, went to gs again for the $3/2 armor all tq, so...
8.77 oop - $3coupon=5.77, submit for 6.99 rebate = profit of $1.22

Store 3:
found 1lb Green Giant carrots 0.50(tpc thru 8/7), bought 3 pkgs at 0.50 each
c9 tank top 3.74, used $5 c9 tq
4 Bic mech pencils 1.20 each, used 2 $1/2 mqs and 4 $1tqs
armor all wheel protectant 6.99, used $2 mq
armor all wipes 3.99, used $2 mq
leather wallet(hubby's christmas) 2.48
3 pkgs 3 pr merona socks 1.48
pd 14.23 oop, got $3 back for armor all tq
14.23 oop - 3.00 coupon= 11.23, submit for 6.99 rebate = $4.24

so, the three stores equal out to $1.54 oop after rebates!  Not bad at all for husband's new wallet, 3# of carrots, lots of Armor all, Bic pens and pencils, Chef Boyardee, a few clothing pieces, 18 pr socks for hubby...I think that's great!

There is another deal with the Armor All, if you aren't interested in the rebate, but don't mind getting overage:
Target carries one product at 2.69, think it's tire spray or something...
buy 2 at 2.69=2.38, use 2 $2mqs and 1 $3/2 tq(since you aren't doing the rebate, you can give this at the register)= overage of $1.62!

Bic stationary coupon, hurry!

woohoo!  Do you still have the Target bic $1/1 stationary coupon?  Well, now Bic pens are a money-maker!  Go up to my coupons.com link at the top of the page and click through until you find the Bic $1/2 mq.  Bic pens are 0.99, pencils 1.20, wite-out 1.24, so 1 mq & 2 TQs should get you some free +overage shooping at Target for school supplies!

Horchata recipe

My son is going to love this!  I got Trenton to try horchata a couple of years ago, and he was hooked.  Now, he asks for it everytime we go to an authentic Mexican restaurant.  You can buy horchata mixes at the store, but it's not the same.  This recipe sounds like a good project for Trenton to do on his own, and something he and I will enjoy!

•Rice -- 2 cups
•Water -- 6 cups
•Cinnamon -- 1/2 teaspoon
•Sugar -- 1/3 cup
•Vanilla -- 1 teaspoon

Method
1.Soak the rice overnight in 3 cups of the water. Add the rice, soaking water and cinnamon to a blender and puree until smooth, 2-3 minutes.
2.Strain into a pitcher through a fine-meshed sieve or several layers of cheesecloth. There should be no grit or large particles in the liquid.
3.Stir in the remaining 3 cups water, sugar and vanilla. Adjust sugar to taste and serve well chilled

Craving Tacos...

...real tacos!  I want some Tacos de barbacoa or tacos de cabeza...I found a recipe that I think I could get quite close to the tacos I am missing from the Maya Mercado near my old job.  I will try this soon...

Ingredients:

Combine the following in a crockpot:
3 pound chuck or rump roast
6 chopped garlic cloves
2 bay leaves
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1 chopped onion
2 Tablespoons whole black pepper

Directions:
Cook for minimum of 6 hours, or until meat falls apart, adding water as necessary to keep covered. Cool meat and finely shred (plan on an hour or so to shred the meat!)
Remove broth from crockpot. Strain out and discard solid ingredients. Add meat back to crockpot.
Add to crockpot:
1 large can tomato sauce
1/4 cup chili powder
1/2 pound green chilis, roasted, skinned and sliced
1/4 cup jalapeno juice
Add enough broth to keep moist.
Cook two more hours.
If you are really brave, instead of just jalapeno juice, use one jar of chopped jalapenos and juice!

The way I am used to these being served is in corn tortillas doubled up, topped with chopped onion, and cilantro(however, I always decline the cilantro).  On the side will be salsa and a lime wedge.  I just take mine with onion, salt, and lime...delish!

I know, I know...barbacoa and cabeza are different from this recipe, as this calls for plain old roast, but for my unadventurous family, I'll make the roast...I will eat the cabeza, but not sure if my kiddos will!

Staples 8/8 preview

Wow!  Lots of free or almost free supplies....I just used my $49 in Staples Rewards to buy ink...yesterday!
Let's see if I can come up with a scenario using my Office Depot $10 Q(Staples accepts competitors Qs) to make some money, or at least get free stuff!
2 reams paper 4.99 each, get 3.99 each in rebate
1 Scotch pop-up desk grip tape dispenser 3.00, use 0.75 mq from scotch site, get 3.00 in rebate
Staples sticky notes 5.29, get 5.29 in rebate
Pentel highligher Handly lines 4.99, get 4.99 in rebate
hmmm...if you get all that, it's $1.25 after Qs and rebates...let's try again:
they also have a 2GB flash drive for 9.99, with 8.99 in rewards back, not rebate.

ok, what if:
case of paper 43.98, get 21.99 in rebate back
scotch pop up tape dispenser 3.00, use 0.75 mq, get 3.00 in rebate
Staples sticky notes 5.29, get 5.29 in rebate
use 10/50 office depot Q
nope, that's $10 oop after rebates...
guess I'll skip Staples this week, but there are some good deals for people that do need school supplies still!
There is also a $5/$50 purchase Q in the Staples ad next week, if you don't have any Office Depot coupons to use.

Target Freebies!

Oh, how I love Target!  Today I bought 6 Digiorno deep dish pizzas(the single serve size) that are $2 right now, used 6 $2 mqs from the Digiorno facebook page to get those all free.  I also bought 3 Chef Boyardee mac & cheese cups 0.87 each, used 3 $1TQs, which adjusted down to make those free.  Lastly, I bought 7 Post-it SuperSticky pads that are $1 each, and used 7 $1 mqs from the Post-it/3m website to get those free!
I paid 0+tax(tax is a killer at $1.62!!!!)  Love free stuff!

I am not sure how long the Digiorno is $2, so you might want to print your Qs from 'liking' Digiorno on facebook soon and head to Target.

Google Search Bar

I recently added a search bar, see it there, above the post?  You can search for anything on the web there...I set it to block 'not-so-nice' sites, so hopefully it won't take you anywhere you don't want to be.  The nice thing is, your results will pop up in a box right under the search bar.  I find often I need to search for particular coupons, so it's handy to be able to search 'Kelloggs Coupon' or whatever...

Steak Tacos tonight!

Yum, I grilled steaks the other night, and I sliced the leftovers for steak tacos tonight.  I topped them with some Dole romaine mix(I got today for free), a mix of cucumber(hubby's grandparents' garden) & tomatoes, sour cream, and green onion...we haven't been having cheese on our tacos lately, and you wouldn't miss it with all those veggies and sour cream!  When hubby gets home, I'll fix his plate with hot salsa and peppers as well.

JCPenney $10 off $10 or more purchase

CVS Bonus Days 8/22-9/18/10

CVS offers Bonus Days occasionally, where multipacks are on special and yield ecbs.  There could be some differences in brands regionally, and I've found in my area, the stores here do NOT mark Bonus Days stuff, so maybe you can use this to your advantage!  Scan the items you are interested in during the Bonus Days promotion, and see if it shows an ecb special on the scanner.  Typically, the stores do not get more of the products in during the promotion, so if you really want something, but it early.  But, if you can wait, they may clearance the leftover out near the end of the promotion.

Spending money...

I hear some Target locations have their bike trailers for 75%...um, not here...ours were 30% last week, and today they hit 50%.  I bought one anyway.  I wanted one, and for $50, I think it's worth it!  Now, if they still have the bike trailers and they hit 75%, I won't hesitate to buy another one, then return it with the 50% receipt...so, shhhh...keep this hot clearance item to yourself!  Hardly anyone is reading my blog, so noone is going to hear this from me, lol!
After Target, I ran into FoodPyramid and Reasors to check out their produce...I bought an Oklahoma cantaloupe, 2 loaves of French bread, some bananas, and some almonds that were clearanced to $1(great for adding to my homemade granola!)..spend $9.27 between the two stores.
I was heading home when I decided I'd go to Homeland first...bought Eagle Mills ultragrain flour, 2# ground beef, 1# Hormel Italian Sausage, and a bag of Dole Romaine salad mix...all for $3.76...that's why I love double coupons!!!  That bag of flour alone before coupons was 3.59, so I got some great deals at Homeland today!

We got home, and the little guy was worn out, but I got him to split a tortilla with peanut butter and bananas with me before he crashed out!  I think tomorrow we'll take the bike trailer out for a spin before it gets too hot!

OH, lovely Air Conditioner!

We are back to cool!  Tuesday evening, our central A/C unit decided to not cool anymore...still blowing air, but it was definitely not cooling.  Fortunately, Trenton's bedroom is not connected to the rest of the house's breakers, heat, and air, so anytime we have an outage, we usually head out there...I was glad to sleep out there Tuesday night, because our house was steamy!
The repairman made it out about 1pm Wednesday.  It was only a capacitor that needed replacement, so under $200 for part and labor...good deal!  It took all day and evening to recover, but we are feeling really good this morning!
I feel like a wimp at times like this...you know, when my Grandma was a kid, they didn't have air conditioning...people now are so spoiled!

Peanut Butter-Yogurt Dip, and a little produce shopping

I'm planning to make this dip today...bought some apples at a produce stand yesterday because I've been craving peanut butter & apple.  The problem with that is I eat way too much peanut butter when I have that snack.  So, I thought I'd give this dip a try:
Peanut Butter Yogurt Fruit Dip:
1/2 cup plain or vanilla yogurt
2 T peanut butter
some people add a bit of honey and cinnamon, but I think I'll leave those out...I will use my homemade plain yogurt!

By the way, I paid way too much for apples...$1.99/lb..whoa!  It was from a produce stand near my house, local grown, huge fruit, but pricey!  Hope they're good!

I also made a surprising find yesterday.  I rarely go into Sav-a-lot, but I needed some baking potatoes, and the store is near me.  We ran in to get potatoes and check prices on other produce.  We got 10# potatoes for 2.99, plums for 0.79/#, Roma tomatoes for 0.99/#, and a locally grown watermelon for 3.99....and surprise, surprise!  That watermelon was one of the best I've ever tasted!  Who would have thought sav-a-lot for watermelon!

And, what did I do with those tomatoes(delicious, by the way!)?  I sliced my homemade oat whey bread, sprayed it with olive oil, and toasted in the oven.  While the bread toasted, I diced the tomatoes, and added garlic and basil and oregano.  After flipping the bread over, I spread cream cheese on it, and added a couple spoonfuls of the tomato mix on top, and let that broil a minute to crisp the bread and soften the tomatoes more....yum!  I'm not sure if you are supposed to broil your toppings on bruschetta, but I did, and it was a big hit at our house last night!

Do you know when to stop?

Coupon-users:  do you know when enough is enough?  When I first started using coupons about 18 months ago, I had alot to learn.  I soon learned where to find the best deals on different products, and how to spend the least amount of money.  When I started shopping at Walgreens, it was a whole new game!  I love games, challenges...and that's what Walgreens was for me.  I wanted the most Register Rewards for the least amount of money.  I planned out transactions week after week to net me lots of junk just so I could get that Register Reward!  I often 'bought' items I didn't need, or more than I needed, just because I had the coupon, and it was a money-maker.
I haven't shopped at Walgreens for about 6 months!  I made the decision because I realized how much unnecessary stuff I was purchasing, and how quickly the tax adds up on those items!  I'm not completely writing Walgreens off...in fact, I was considering starting back sometime soon.  But I want to make certain my way of thinking has changed.  I think shopping at CVS has helped.  Since they have limits, it is hard to overdo it, and why would you need to overdo it?  When you have been using coupons for over a year, you should have a great stockpile, so you don't need 10 bottles of shampoo just because it's free.  I think that's my thinking now...I don't even have the desire to purchase the items I already have in my stockpile...that's a good thing!
What got me thinking of all this is reading message boards for CVS and Walgeens recently.  I see posts from long-time couponers saying how they are so excited for an upcoming deal, or that they bought 30 of a particular item...I just wonder why they haven't stopped or slowed down?!  It's not exciting for me anymore...sure, I enjoy shopping and getting a good deal, but the whole drugstore game is not the same for me.
So, I wonder...how many of the long-time couponers really still shop like they used to?  Or, have they cut back on the deals?

Thoughts?  Has your shopping habit changed with time and stockpile?

Garrett...

So, we are a co-sleeping family.  Not by my husband's choice, but he tolerates it.  I had every intention to put Garrett directly in his crib as a newborn, but he choked and gagged alot in the hospital, so I just couldn't make myself be apart from him.  We've tried, a few times in the past several months, to get him back into the crib, but Garrett holds his breath, and it absolutely terrifies me.  Only once was I able to get him to 'cry it out' to some extent...it took 90 minutes, and he only slept for 30 minutes in the crib.  Ok, that's alot of talking..back to the breath-holding:
I read that alot of babies hold their breath, sometimes involuntarily as a result of low iron levels.  Garrett has had a hemoglobin check and was 'normal' so we aren't sure why he does it...maybe habit.  Anyway, any time he wants momma and momma has to use the restroom or make a phonecall, or start laundry, etc...he holds his breath, especially if daddy tries to hold him.  Let's not even mention trying to leave him in the crib so I can  take care of chores!
So last night we were heading to bed, and I wanted to use the restroom and brush my teeth first, so Vince grabbed Garrett and proceeded to put the living room in order from Garrett's new pulling-stuff-off-the-shelf game.  Before I even walked down the hall I could see Garrett was holding his breath.  I tell Vince, he looks then blows air in Garrett's face.  This usually works, but not this time.  I go and grab Garrett, thinking he'll take his breath.  Nope, I have to breath in his face, too.  Three more times.  I am almost frantic by now as his lips were purple.  He finally took a breath and cried out, and then almost immediately his eyes rolled back and he PASSED OUT!  It wasn't a long fainting spell...before I could finish saying 'He passed out!', he had his eyes open again.  After he came to, he seemed a little weird, and I did NOT like it!
My husband, like his mother and my mother, are of the thinking that it's harmless and that if a child does pass out from holding their breath, that their body will take over and allow normal breathing again.  I know that's true, but it is of very little comfort to me.  I don't think it's a good idea to allow that to happen often, and if we don't get to Garrett fairly quickly when he holds his breath, he will pass out again.  I hope he grows out of it soon, because I do want him to move to the crib, and to his own room, but I am not willing to let him just stand there until he faints because it's 'harmless.'

Besides the fact that Garrett woke me up at 430am today, he seems fine...clingy, but fine.
